Thomas is a clear and inspiring composition and trumpet teacher and is able to give his students confidence in their work. His students have been pleased with his reliability and reassurance. Following success in the senior category of the 2013 BBC Inspire Young Composers’
Competition with his Recomposed Baroque, described as a joyful exuberance by competition judge Anna Meredith, Thomas studied with Rory Boyle at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow. As part of the prize for winning the BBC Inspire Competition, Thomas’s Recomposed Baroque was performed by members of the Aurora Orchestra at the 2013 BBC Proms and was subsequently broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
Following this, he was commissioned to write Cairo for Alison Teale (principle cor anglais, BBC Symphony Orchestra) accompanied by other musicians from the orchestra. Cairo, which provides a snapshot of the bustling Egyptian metropolis with intertwining themes from the Story Told by the Jewish Physician from 1001 Nights, was premiered in November 2014 at BBC Maida Vale Studios and was broadcast on the ‘Hear and Now’ show in March 2015. An exploration into cor anglais multiphonics was a large part of this project. He was also awarded the Holme Valley Parish Council’s Exceptional Achievers Award in 2013, as recognition for winning the competition.
